How to Avoid GMOs in Halloween Candy

Halloween is all about candy for children and for adults who have fond memories of trick-or-treating. However, most candy is loaded with genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. At Naturally Savvy, we are opposed to GMOs and advocate eating non-GMO food. That can make it tricky when it comes to purchasing Halloween candy. The first step to avoiding GMOs is to know what ingredients indicate their presence.

There are a number of GMO ingredients in Halloween candy. This list includes GMO corn derived ingredients: high fructose corn syrup, corn starch, modified corn starch, fructose, dextrose and glucose. The list also includes sugar because it can come from GMO sugar beets, and soy derived ingredients, including soy lecithin and soybean oil. Other common GMO ingredients in Halloween candy are cottonseed oil, canola oil, isolates, isoflavones, food starch and vegetable oil.

The next step to avoid GMOs in Halloween candy is to look for products that are either certified organic (organic products cannot contain GMOs) and/or certified by the Non-GMO Project. To make it easier for you to have a GMO-free Halloween, I have created a list of candy that has been deemed GMO-free, starting with what I consider the best kind--chocolate. My favorite brand of GMO-free chocolate is Unreal, which makes yummy versions of popular chocolate candies (think M&Ms, Snickers, Milky Way, and Reeses Peanutbutter Cups). They make small versions of each of their candies and are sold at Target and a slew of more regional chains, including Save Mart, Winco Foods, Wegmans, Kinney Drugs, Shaw’s and Stop & Shop. You can also buy them online.

Here are some other chocolate candies to try:

Dagoba Organic Chocolates: Milk chocolate bar and milk chocolate squares

Theo Chocolates: Pure 45% milk chocolate bar

Equal Exchange: Chocolate Minis

Endangered Species: Chocolate bug bites

Alter Eco: Dark chocolate truffles that are more of a treat for adults as most children prefer the sweeter taste of milk chocolate.

Halloween would not be complete without lollipops, gummy candies, gum and hard candies. Here are candies in each category that are also free of any artificial ingredients.

YummyEarth: Organic lollipops

Surf Sweets: Spooky spiders and sour worms

Glee Gum: A chemical-sweetener free gum

All of these candies are available to purchase online, and many of them can be found at your favorite natural food stores.
